MBBR Bio Media är en förbättrad version av fasta membranbioreaktor, liknande SAFF (Surface Area Fixed Membrane Technology (SAFF) eller Rotating Bioreactor (RBC), förutom att MBBR Carrier Medium Floats Freely i avlopp/avloppsvatten. MBBR bio media reactor consists of a storage tank filled with immersed plastic (usually HDPE, polyethylene or polypropylene) medium with a specific gravity less than 1.0. The large surface area of plastic provides sufficient surface for the growth of bacteria. Biomass grows on the surface in the form of a thin film, and its thickness is usually between 50-300 microns. Each individual biological carrier increases productivity by providing a protected surface area to support the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within its cells. It is this high-density bacterial population that achieves high-speed biodegradation in the system, while also providing process reliability and ease of operation. The medium or coarse bubble diffuser placed uniformly at the bottom of the reactor maintains the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration>2. 5-3 mg/l för att ta bort BOD. För nitrifikation upprätthålls fortfarande en hög upplöst syrekoncentration. För att hålla mediet flödande ut ur tanken installeras en sil på nedströmsväggen. En klarare eller DAF placeras nedströms om filter MBBR -tanken för att separera biomassa och fasta ämnen från avloppsvattnet. Denna process kräver inte slamåtervinning.
